Barts Health partners with H.I.G. Realty to deliver first Barts Life Sciences Cluster project
Barts Life Sciences is pleased to welcome a major milestone in the development of the new Cluster, as H.I.G. Realty and Barts Health NHS Trust announce a strategic partnership to deliver the first applied healthcare innovation building at Cavell Street, Whitechapel.
The new 170,000 sq ft facility will be the first development to come forward following the public launch of the Barts Life Sciences Cluster, which brings together Barts Health and leading global investors to accelerate innovation that directly benefits patients and communities across East London and beyond.
A new model for NHS–industry collaboration
As part of the Cluster, Cavell Street will establish a dedicated hub where NHS clinicians, researchers, and industry partners can work side-by-side to shape, test, and validate next generation technologies. Companies specialising in MedTech, AI, and digital health will be able to co-develop and refine solutions in real clinical environments, supported by teams from The Royal London Hospital and other Barts Health hospitals.
This unprecedented level of integration between care settings, research expertise, and commercial capability is designed to speed the journey from prototype to patient, supporting both improved health outcomes and economic opportunity for the local area.
The partnership marks the first step in realising the ambition set out at the official launch of the Barts Life Sciences Cluster.
Shane DeGaris, Group Chief Executive of Barts Health NHS Trust, welcomed the development, noting that Cavell Street begins to turn the Cluster’s vision into reality by creating environments where innovation is shaped by NHS teams and tested in real care settings.
Jérôme Fouillé, Managing Director at H.I.G. Realty in Europe, highlighted the role Cavell Street will play in enabling global companies to collaborate directly with NHS clinicians, reinforcing the Cluster’s position as a national exemplar for innovation translation.
Cavell Street represents the first in a series of major developments planned within the Cluster, which aims to make Whitechapel one of the UK’s most important centres for health innovation.
