Finding Heart Disease Before it Finds You – A Data Science Opportunity
A project using Artificial Intelligence to tackle cardiovascular healthcare inequalities in North East London has been awarded over £300,000 by Barts Charity. The PREDICT project will use patient data to predict and prevent emergency admissions to hospital for patients with heart valve disease.
The 3-year project will translate medical notes into structured data which is suitable for identifying groups of people at risk of undiagnosed heart valve disease. These groups will be offered heart tests in an environment that better suits their needs, potentially preventing an emergency years before it happens.
PREDICT brings together clinicians and data scientists from Barts Health and Barts Life Sciences, natural language processing specialists Clinithink, and experts in urban analytics from University College London.
Prof. Guy Lloyd, Director of Diagnostics at the Bart’s Heart Centre, said, “This collaboration could prevent up to 150 emergency admissions a year, saving £5000 per patient, prolonged hospital stays and immeasurable suffering. We’re thrilled that Barts Charity selected our project, and we’re already looking forward to expanding the approach to other diseases and regions.”
